New badges in Kunera
Recently Kunera included 6.000 objects from the documentation of Hendrik Jan van Beuningen. The data is now online for everyone to search and browse. Hendrik Jan van Beuningen's lifework and its meaning for Kunera will be the center of attention during a symposium on Thursday 29 September.
Badge collector Hendrik Jan van Beuningen worked on a documentation of badges for decades. He noted the information of every medieval badge and ampulla that he came across on index cards which he kept in a large filing cabinet. He made many photographs, also of those badges that he did not purchase himself. When he passed away in 2015, his documentation contained no less than 9,000 index cards with data of as many badges.
Van Beuningen's documentation is of enormous importance for badge research in general. Therefore the Kunera team is incredibly happy with the permission of the Van Beuningen family to include this data in the Kunera database. Because van Beuningen's documentation consists of handwritten cards it took several years to select and process the information. The information of 6.000 objects were incorporated. The data from Van Beuningen's documentation is now online!
During a symposium on 29 September the Kunera team would like to highlight the importance of Van Beuningen's work. Drs Willy Piron (Radboud University) will demonstrate what it means for Kunera. He will also devote attention to the new Kunera app. Since December 2021 Kunera online has a new look providing the user with a better experience. Other scholars from the Netherlands and abroad will talk about their recent research on badges. Among them are prof dr. Kathryn Rudy (University of St Andrews) and prof em. Jos Koldeweij (Radboud University).
The programme and information about registration will be available soon.
