Badges in world history
For the Dutch book Nog meer wereldgeschiedenis van Nederland [More World History of the Netherlands], Hanneke van Asperen wrote a contribution about the year 1382. Then, the miracles happened that started to attract pilgrims to 's-Hertogenbosch and the mass production of some fascinating badges commenced.
Dutch history is inextricably connected with the history of the world. People influenced each other across long distances through migration, trade and the exchange of knowledge. This mutual influence was more intense than we have long thought. The successful book Wereldgeschiedenis van Nederland [World History of the Netherlands]
has shown how international Dutch history actually was, but there are many more examples. Nog meer wereldgeschiedenis van Nederland is the sequel to Wereldgeschiedenis van Nederland. The present volume contains over one hundred stories about the history of the Netherlands.
In a promovideo Hanneke van Asperen introduces her contribution to Nog meer wereldgeschiedenis van Nederland.
Badges with an image of the Virgin of 's-Hertogenbosch are clearly recognizable. There have been found in the city of 's-Hertogenbosch, but also beyond the current borders of the Netherlands, as far as Gdańsk. These archaeological finds demonstrate how far people in the late Middle Ages were prepared to travel for the Virgin of 's-Hertogenbosch. At the same time, these badges set new pilgrims in motion, because they depicted the special qualities of the cult statue in 's-Hertogenbosch.
