A new Kunera website
The Kunera team is proud to present with the new web application. We hope that the website serves you as Kunera user even better than before whether you are here for (scholarly) research purposes, looking to identify a badge or out of curiosity.
Since the start in April 1998 the Kunera project has yielded many results. It has lead to several dissertations on the subjects of badges and ampullae, toexhibitions and many publications. Among these are the books Heilig en Profaan which are now regarded as standard works on badges.
Kunera started out as a database. In 2009 it became possible to develop a web application thanks to a subsidy from the Reinier Post Foundation. For this, Kunera asked the tech company Maxdoro. New GIS technology made it possible to project provenance and find sites of badges onto Google Maps. In addition to badges Kunera also included routes of the Brugse Wegwijzer and the miracle book of 's-Hertogenbosch. This web application was in use until Autumn 2021. By then hundreds of users had visited the Kunera website, but an update had become necessary, because the site no longer fitted modern standards.
When the Kunera project started in 1998 its main purpose was documenting medieval badges and ampullae. The underlying idea was that the fragile material, the meaning of which is slowly but surely being recognized, should be preserved and should remain available for research purposes. Thanks to grants, for example from NWO in 2002, the project could be continued. With the new application the Kunera team hopes that even more people will find their way to Kunera and that the images on badges and ampullae will continue to mesmerize and fascinate.
The new web design was made possible thanks to a financial contribution from research institute RICH | Radboud Institute for Culture & History of Radboud University.
