900 new badges and ampullae
In March 2024, Kunera was updated. This means that data of 900 new badges and ampullae are made available online. Additionally, 90 cult sites do now have a description giving even more background information on the cult landscape of medieval Europe.
In February, the online application of the Kunera database was updated. In concrete terms this means that the badges and ampullae that were recently added to the database are now visible online. We are talking about 900 new specimens. Before, the Kunera database contained 27,430 badges and ampullae, the database now has over 28.300 objects.
Furthermore, Kunera researchers have been busy adding coordinates and descriptions of every pilgrimage site that is represented in the Kunera database with one or more badges. Before the recent update, 228 cult sites were visible on the map. Now the map shows 321 cult sites. In other words, the Kunera database contains medieval badges and ampullae from 321 different places of pilgrimage.
To illustrate, looking for pilgrim’s badges, e.g. of Mary of Montserrat, users do not only see blue icons on the finds sites of the badges. They also see a purple icon on the location of the pilgrimage site Montserrat, ensuring that the distance a badge has traveled is visible at a glance. Additionally, more background information can be found by clicking on that purple icon. Each pilgrimage site, of which Kunera contains one or more badges, now has a short text on its origins and history.
Summarizing, the map in the Kunera database now contains even more information than before about the cult landscape of medieval Europe.
